The limousine has always been the epitome of class and elegance. Having someone drive you around town and to big events is everyone’s dream. Here are 5 simple facts to help you get to know the limousine a little better…
1. The first limousine was built in 1902, but they weren’t the huge automobiles that we are used to seeing today. It was more like the stagecoaches of old with the driver seat outside of the main cab. Back then, the structure and design were all about privacy for the passenger.
2. The word “limousine” comes from a geographic area in France known for its harsh weather. The region was best known for its traditional vehicles used by members of the guard which needed protection from the area’s weather. It resembled the concept of the car we know and love.
3. The first real “stretched out” limo was built in Arkansas in 1928. It was one of its kind and was of the bestselling automobiles of its time. Modern limousines come in various designs – buses, vans, RV’s, or stretch SUVs. Just after its introduction, several big bands used the limo to carry their band instruments and equipment.
4. Air conditioning was introduced to the limousine along with several other luxury automobiles in 1939 by a New York-based company. The purpose was to avoid dehydration and serious heat issues.
5. Limousines come in varying shapes and sizes. Although most limousines are somewhat stretched out, the longest limo was one hundred heat long and manufactured in California in 1997. Along with two separate driver cabins (one in the front and one in the back), it also had 26 wheels. Most limousines are only available in two standard SUV sizes – the 140-inch which carries fourteen passengers and the 200-inch monster which carries up to a massive twenty-four passengers.
